Trying to Write a Sonnet

Here's what I found out tonight: IT'S HARD TO WRITE A SONNET.

My broader topic is love/romance, and I chose to write a sonnet this week, in hopes of gaining a new appreciation for the sonnets and to try and get into the mind of Shakespeare a little. Although it was a little frustrating for me (I'm more of a free verse person), it was also a lot of fun. But as of right now, I only have the first four lines. It's my goal to finish it this weekend. But here's what I've got so far:

Sometimes I get so full of flame I blurt
While Formality blushes. However
I soon play off my passion as mere flirt
Or flatness- I love you!. . . or whatever.

If any of you have some suggestions of how I can push through my frustration/writer's block, please let me know!

hey this might be some inspiration for you. I had to write a sonnet in my 251 class and I thought it was the worst, there was one kid in the class though that was pure inspiration to me. His name is Than and here is his sonnet

Ode to my Pants

Today my words are those of sad report
So perk your ears and listen to my tale
For whether you be wearing pants or shorts
Be careful when you choose to fill your sails
It happened to me one day at the school
While pausing for relief atop the stairs
The outcome left me feeling quite the fool
I changed the color of my underwear
Due to pressure from within my belly
I felt compelled to expel dirty air
The rush of wind was more than simply smelly
Inside my shorts I knew something was there
While my intention had been butt to fart
Somehow instead the action was a shart

You. Are. Hilarious. Thank you for this glorious source of inspiration!
Wow Ladd. That is crazy funny!

Hannah, I think we operate under the same brain waves or something. I wrote a post about Sonnet 116 last night so you should check it out.

One thing that has always worked really well for me is that I have a friend that is really good at rhyming things. So he will give me a line and I will have to give him something that rhymes and matches the subject. It sounds juvenile but it's actually a really good exercise. If you give someone a line, they can bounce back with another one. It makes the whole experience a lot less painful!
So I think I'm going to do that group sonnet thing. Tomorrow I'm going to go around to some friends in my ward and see if they'll participate. If it goes well, maybe we could do this with our class. You interested?
Sonnets are a lot harder than you would think. All the rhyme schemes and rhythms that go into a poem. You don't really think about it/appreciate it until you're trying to copy-cat Shakespeare and realize he really was brilliant for being able to write that kind of stuff.
As far as suggestions go, I know love is a definite favorite for topics, but you might try exploring other topics to, or just throwing a different view into play. I remember that one of Professor Burton's poems was about a banana, that was funny and original!

Thank you for the suggestion! I think you're right, I could definitely branch out to different themes.
